Founded in January 2024, ConnectIDD, LLC is on a mission to create more inclusive, accessible communities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). With a bold, national scope and a deeply personal vision, ConnectIDD supports organizations, governments, and communities in delivering better systems of care and opportunity for people with disabilities.

Led by founder and CEO Michael Thomas, ConnectIDD has already impacted thousands of lives across more than 10 states. The agency is now planting deep roots in Western North Carolina, recognizing the Asheville area’s welcoming spirit and untapped potential for disability inclusion. Through consulting, advocacy, and cross-sector collaboration, ConnectIDD is helping redefine what’s possible—for service providers, for families, and most importantly, for people with disabilities.

Check out our Q&A with Michael below…

Where did your vision begin? How has it grown?

Michael Thomas: The vision for ConnectIDD was born out of a decade of fielding calls from families and organizations across the country asking for help. Some wanted to replicate our previous model in their community; others needed support to improve their programs. Today, ConnectIDD exists to answer that call. We provide whatever support is needed to help organizations better fulfill their mission and purpose.

What brought you to Asheville?

Though we’re based in North Texas, we chose Asheville because it felt like the perfect fit. This is one of the most inclusive communities in the country, and while the state provides decent support funding, there’s a major gap in service providers—especially in Western North Carolina. We saw an opportunity to bring our expertise where it’s truly needed and to help grow something meaningful.

Who are your key partners?

We work with a wide variety of partners—state agencies, service providers, cities, counties, businesses, and more. Anyone committed to making life better for people with disabilities is someone we want to collaborate with.

What has been your greatest challenge and victory?

The greatest challenge? Getting siloed systems—education, employment, healthcare, social services—to work together or even acknowledge how interconnected they are.

Our greatest victory came from our earlier work in North Texas: launching programs that shifted the expectations for adults with disabilities, ultimately leading to a $30 million capital campaign and the creation of the first continued education program for adults with IDD in the state.

What’s something most people don’t know about your organization?

We serve a wide range of clients—our partners range from organizations with $100K annual budgets to those operating at $60 million per year. We adapt to meet each client’s needs.

What advice would you give someone entering this field?

If something feels wrong, speak up. If you know it can be better, don’t be afraid to shout it from the rooftops. The only constant is change—get comfortable with it.

What does “community” mean to you?

Community is a place where everyone feels welcomed, accepted, and included—across all areas of life.

Anything else you’d like to share?

We’re on a mission to make Western North Carolina the best place in the world for people with disabilities and their families to live and thrive. If you’re connected to that goal in any way, we want to meet you.

When Davide Zanchi took the reins at IS Technology, Hurricane Helene had just knocked out power across the region. It was a chaotic first day, but also a moment of clarity. Davide saw firsthand how essential reliable technology is for business survival and growth. From that pivotal moment, he’s led IS Technology with a mission to deliver not just IT support, but full-spectrum solutions that empower local businesses to thrive.

Rooted in Western North Carolina, IS Technology has grown from a regional provider into a trusted technology partner serving clients across six states—all while keeping its heart and headquarters local. From advanced cybersecurity to AI and office equipment, their approach is grounded in speed, reliability, and personal connection.

Check out our conversation with Davide below…

Where did your vision begin? How has it grown?

My vision began the day Hurricane Helene hit. I had just stepped in as CEO, and everything was down—power, phones, networks. It was a wake-up call. Technology isn’t just a tool; it’s a lifeline. I knew I didn’t want IS Technology to be just another vendor, I wanted us to be a trusted partner, especially in crisis.

Since then, we’ve expanded our services dramatically. We now offer advanced IT, cybersecurity, AI integration, and cloud-based solutions – all under one roof. But at our core, we’ve kept the same belief: local businesses deserve world-class technology, delivered with speed, heart, and purpose.

What made you choose the Asheville area?

I was drawn to Asheville for more than the mountains. I saw a business community that was innovative, values-driven, and deeply connected. After taking over IS Technology during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, I witnessed the community’s resilience firsthand—it confirmed I was in the right place. This is a region where businesses care about each other and about doing good work, and that aligns perfectly with our culture.

Who are your key partners?

While we serve clients across six states, our most meaningful partnerships are right here in Western North Carolina. We work closely with the Chamber, our vendor network, and most importantly, our clients. Whether we’re helping a law office stay secure or rebuilding systems after a cyberattack, we show up fully. That’s what partnership means to us.

What has been your greatest challenge? Your greatest victory?

My first day on the job, post-Hurricane Helene, was also our biggest test. Businesses were down, our systems were stressed, and our future felt uncertain. But we rose to the challenge. We earned trust, fixed what was broken, and built something stronger. Today, we boast a 97.7% first-contact resolution rate and support clients across six states. Our greatest challenge truly became our greatest victory.

What’s a little-known fact about your business?

For more than a decade, we’ve supported AdventHealth, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the U.S., across their hospitals and clinics. From secure IT to reliable printing in life-saving environments, we’ve delivered with excellence. While we have national reach, our heart stays local.

What advice would you give someone starting in your field?

Your background is your superpower. I came from Italy with a dream, shaped it at Stanford, and brought it to life in Western North Carolina. But it’s not about being the smartest—it’s about building the right team. At IS Technology, I’m lucky to lead a group of incredible professionals like Sharyne, Pam, Stephen, and Joey. If you’re just starting: be bold, build well, and let your work speak louder than your fear.

What does “community” mean to you?

Community is the “why” behind everything we do. It’s in the late-night tech support, the unprompted business referrals, the team members stepping up for one another. It’s shared goals, mutual support, and the belief that when one of us grows, we all move forward. That’s the spirit we operate in every day.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Technology can be overwhelming – especially when businesses are juggling multiple vendors for IT, cybersecurity, cloud systems, printers, and more. At IS Technology, we make it simple. We offer everything under one roof, with one point of contact, and a deep commitment to your business’s success. We’re here to help you work smarter and grow safer—with the technology your business deserves.

With nearly three decades in financial services, Paidemoyo “Pai” Charasika has worn many hats, from bank teller to seasoned investment advisor. But it wasn’t until he aligned his passion with his purpose that his work truly transformed.

Today, Pai leads with heart and strategy as the Senior Wealth Manager at Copperwood Financial, a boutique investment firm serving high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and professionals. He’s also the Co-Founder and Director of Pro Athlete Wealth, a mission-driven affiliate dedicated to helping athletes navigate their financial futures. Whether he’s creating legacy plans for retirees or teaching young athletes how to manage NIL income, Pai’s approach is the same: build authentic relationships, empower with education, and design plans that last beyond the game.

Check out our Q&A with Pai Charasika below…

Tell us about your business and your role in it.

At Copperwood Financial, I’m the Senior Wealth Manager, working primarily with high-net-worth families and professionals ages 45–75. We focus on intensive financial planning—whether for retirement income, tax strategy, charitable giving, or risk management. We stay agnostic in our investment approach and are strong advocates for private market opportunities like venture capital and private equity.

I also serve as the Director of Sports & Entertainment for our affiliate, Pro Athlete Wealth. There, I help professional, college, and even high school athletes navigate the evolving world of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation, helping them plan both financially and for life after sport.

Where did your vision begin?

My journey started over 27 years ago as a bank teller. While I loved the client-facing side, I soon realized that traditional banking was too transactional. After transitioning into investment advising and building a successful career at major firms, I still felt something was missing. Four years ago, I met Larry Gatz—now our managing partner—who introduced me to a financial planning model focused on deeply understanding clients and building tailored strategies. That’s when it all clicked.

Who are your key partners?

  • Larry Gatz, Founder of Copperwood Financial
  • Justin Bledsoe, CPA at Bracket Tax
  • Amita Peltz, Estate Planning Attorney at Worley & Peltz
  • Josh Wilson, Sports & Entertainment Attorney at GRSM
  • Nick Stover, Branding/Marketing at Shark Jockey Pro

These partners provide the multidisciplinary support that makes our financial plans truly holistic.

What makes your business stand out?

At Copperwood, we emphasize planning first and investment strategy second. At Pro Athlete Wealth, we’re changing the narrative for athletes by offering practical education and support—from budgeting basics to exit strategies. Our financial literacy platform, Athluential, helps athletes become “Champions Beyond the Game.”

What advice would you give to someone starting in your field?

Know where your passion lies within financial services, and let that passion guide the value you provide. Early in my career, I thought being a financial advisor meant being a salesperson. But it’s really about active listening, educating, and building trust-based relationships.

What does “community” mean to you?

After Hurricane Helene, I officially made Asheville home—and I’ve never seen a community more tightly knit. Crises can divide or unite, and Asheville chose unity. Community, to me, is an ecosystem of people with different strengths coming together for the greater good.

In a business world often defined by hustle and noise, Shawn Smart is helping entrepreneurs reclaim clarity and control. As the founder of Smart Shawn Consulting, Shawn has built a boutique firm rooted in purpose: to support small business owners – especially those with limited marketing budgets – by providing systems that make growth more sustainable and life more balanced. From AI-powered tools to grassroots marketing, Smart Shawn Consulting empowers the overlooked and overworked to thrive.

Since relaunching the business in 2023, Shawn has been on a mission to uplift changemakers, solo entrepreneurs, and service-based businesses like dentists, coaches, and contractors. With a hands-on approach and a heart for community, he’s proving that working smarter – not harder – isn’t just a catchy phrase – it’s a movement.

Tell us about your business and your role in it.

Smart Shawn Consulting is a boutique business consulting firm that empowers solo entrepreneurs and small businesses – especially those with limited marketing budgets – to grow through automation, delegation, and AI integration. I serve as the lead consultant and strategist, working hands-on with clients to build sustainable growth strategies. Our mission is to help business owners work on their business, not in it.

How did you come up with the concept and name?

The concept came from my own experience as an entrepreneur. I saw so many business owners – especially in underserved communities – struggling to do it all. I knew that smart systems could change that. The name “Smart Shawn” was a nickname people gave me for my creative ideas and solutions, so it felt like the perfect fit – authentic, personal, and memorable.

What makes Smart Shawn Consulting stand out?

We take a human-centered approach. I walk alongside clients instead of handing them a to-do list. Many feel overlooked by traditional consultants – I treat them like family. We blend real-world marketing skills with AI-powered tools to help clients grow smarter, not harder.

Do you have a team? What do you look for when hiring?

I work with contractors as needed and prioritize hiring adaptable, creative self-starters who understand small business culture and bring mission-driven energy to the table.

What was the biggest lesson you learned in your first year?

That hustle alone doesn’t scale. You can’t do everything yourself without burning out. I had to embrace delegation and trust systems – that changed everything.

What’s next for your business?

In the next year, I plan to expand our client base across NC and launch a digital course platform. In five years, I envision a national footprint, a full team, and an incubator program for underrepresented business owners.

Why join the Chamber?

I wanted to connect with other changemakers, raise visibility for minority-owned businesses, and stay plugged into local growth. The Chamber is a great platform for community-minded initiatives.

What do you love about doing business in Asheville?

Asheville is full of heart, hustle, and creativity. The business ecosystem here values collaboration over competition – it’s inspiring to be a part of that.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I’m not just building a business – I’m building a movement. My goal is to make business feel doable, not daunting. I’m also passionate about mentorship, youth programs, and nonprofit partnerships that support financial literacy and entrepreneurship in underserved communities. Smart Shawn Consulting is about purpose as much as profit.

The Asheville Business Summit is back and bigger than ever. Now in its third year, this event has become a must-attend for local professionals, entrepreneurs, and teams looking to grow, connect, and be inspired. We caught up with co-founder Beth Lemmel to learn more about this year’s vision – and why now’s the time to grab your tickets.

What is the Asheville Business Summit, and how did it get started?

The Asheville Business Summit was born out of a desire to create a space for businesses to connect, grow, and be inspired. In 2022, co-founders Beth Lemmel and Bill Gilliland of ActionCOACH organized a last-minute event that drew 100 attendees hungry for connection and learning after the pandemic. That initial spark turned into something much bigger. By 2024, the Summit had grown to 350 attendees, world-class speakers, and strong community partnerships. Now entering its third year, the 2025 Summit is poised to be the most impactful yet.

What makes this year’s Summit special?

This year marks a powerful moment for Asheville’s business community. As we near one year since Hurricane Helene, the 2025 Asheville Business Summit will bring together up to 500 attendees at the Diana Wortham Theatre for a day of reconnection, exploration, and forward-thinking conversation. In addition to eight sessions with top-notch speakers, the event includes two bonus gatherings: a free kickoff party downtown and a ticketed VIP dinner at Highland Brewing featuring Leah Wong Ashburn. With a focus on resilience, innovation, and community, the Summit is more than a conference – it’s a catalyst for progress.

How can people get involved now?

Tickets are on sale at wncsummit.com, and early bird pricing ends in early August – so don’t wait! Group tickets are also available for teams of four or more. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur, part of a small business, or leading a larger team, this is your chance to invest in growth, right here in Western North Carolina.

Follow the event on Facebook.

Three Notch Group may be a new name in Asheville, but its legacy runs deep. Formerly Brooks Engineering Associates, this respected firm has been shaping Western North Carolina’s development for over two decades. After merging with Southeastern-based CDG, Inc. in 2024, the firm reintroduced itself with a bold new name and a shared vision: to guide clients through complexity with integrity and trust.

Now known as Three Notch Group, the firm offers comprehensive civil and environmental engineering services across the Southeast, with nine office locations and more than 220 professionals. Despite its regional scale, Three Notch maintains a strong commitment to local relationships, community support, and meaningful partnerships. Their roots may be historical, but their focus is firmly on the future.

Check out our Q&A with Jack Booth below…

How has your company grown over the years?

Three Notch Group has experienced tremendous growth over the past 80 years. What started as a single office in Andalusia, Alabama has grown into nine offices across three states with nearly 220 employees. Each of the thousands of projects we’ve completed has strengthened relationships with our clients and helped build trust in our team. We’ve been named an ENR Top 500 Design Firm for six consecutive years, validating both the quality of our work and the strength of our values.

What’s a little-known fact about your business?

Our name, Three Notch Group, is inspired by the historic Three Notch Trail—a 19th-century route used to connect communities and guide travelers through new terrain. It’s a symbol of heritage, leadership, and the role we play in helping clients navigate complex challenges with clarity and confidence.

How has your idea of success transformed over time?

Nearly a decade ago, we set ambitious goals: expand into multiple states, grow our team, and be recognized as an Exceptional Workplace. We’ve exceeded many of those goals, and now operate regionally with more than 220 employees. As our footprint has grown, so has our vision. Today, success is about more than growth—it’s about cultivating a culture people want to be part of and continuing to deliver exceptional results with care and purpose.

What do you see as your company’s legacy?

We hope our legacy is one of lasting impact—not just in the structures we design, but in the relationships we build, the communities we support, and the careers we help grow. From the projects that improve infrastructure to the people who become leaders on our team, we strive to be remembered for delivering work with integrity and investing in people and places for the long term.

What’s on the horizon?

We’re focused on growth that is both strategic and purposeful. That includes expanding our office presence, further developing our team, and advancing our goal of becoming a nationally recognized Exceptional Workplace. We’re also leaning into innovation and creative problem-solving—because we believe being great engineers means delivering more than just technical solutions. We aim to be true partners in building a better future.
